Buddy Bench: Den 3 Scouts donate to Tilford

The members of Pack 47, Den 3 Cub Scouts shared a special gift with their classmates at Tilford Elementary on Tuesday: A Buddy Bench. Working with parents and Scout leaders, the youngsters helped assemble, sand and finish the bench, which soon will find its place near the Tilford playground. The project accomplished several goals, says Den 3 leader and Scout mom Chelsea Kettler.

Scout camp: Outdoor cooking, life lessons and team-building

Library Gingerbread House Contest to return this year

Virginia Holsten and the rest of the Vinton Public Library staff are again inviting area residents to compete in the gingerbread house contest. Contestants can drop off their houses until Dec. 16. The houses will remain on display in the library through Dec. 18-22. The houses must be completely edible. Only one entry per person or group. Entry forms are available at the library.

Niebuhr accepted for admission to Luther College

Scot Schaeffer, Luther College vice president for enrollment management, has announced that Moriah Niebuhr of Blairstown, Iowa, has been accepted for admission for the 2018-19 academic year. Niebuhr has been awarded the Founders Scholarship. A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,050, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs.

Marcie McKenna receives Doctor of Chiropractic degree

Marcie McKenna of Dysart, IA, received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree during the Oct. 20, 2017 commencement ceremony at Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa. Vinton Kiwanis Club marks 70th year

November, 1947. Allan B. Kline, the Vinton farmer and seed dealer, ended his term as Iowa Farm Bureau President, just before becoming the president of the national organization. I still remember the mirror on my grandparent's wall, with Kline's name on it, and a tiny round area with a few kernels of corn in it. "Solon" was a word newspapers used in headlines, not referring to the eastern Iowa city, but as a word referring to Politicians.

Fareway employees donate to Breast Cancer Survivors

Dave Kelchen presents a donation to the Benton County Breast Cancer Survivors Group. On behalf of the survivors accepting are Deb Wilberg, Charlotta Fisher, Kathie Ervin, and Dawn Yenser. Fareway employees are allowed to wear pink in support of the survivors and donate money for the worthy cause. The Survivors Group offers help to all women who have been affected by breast cancer, from those who survived it years ago, to those facing new diagnoses.

Jordan Biertzer Named to Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport Dean's List

Jordan Biertzer of Vinton, IA, a student in the Doctor of Chiropractic Program at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, has been named to the Summer 2017 Trimester Dean's List. To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 in all studies for the respective term. The highest possible GPA is a 4.

Be You Bravely: Event receives praise from teens, parents; organizers begin planning 2018 event

The first Be You Bravely, a faith-based event designed to help teenage girls face the challenges of their teenage years with confidence and grace, was a success, both in the number of students who signed up and the comments from the attendees, as well as their parents.
